Summer is a busy time for traveling and spending time with family and friends. As you prepare for your summer vacation, here are 10 tips to be sure that you stay healthy and manage your blood sugar and diabetes:
1. Be prepared!
Try to eliminate last minute stress. Begin planning in advance so you can get medications and snacks ready and packed. Pack twice the medication you will need just in case you run out or lose it. Keep it in your carry-on luggage so it is always with you.
2. Have all the necessary medical papers
Obtain extra prescriptions and take any letters documenting your diabetes and health concerns. ALWAYS wear your diabetic ID bracelet.
3. Medications
Have a check up and make sure all of your prescriptions are filled before you leave. Ask your doctor for a prescription in case of an emergency. Ask your diabetes educator how to adjust medications for time zone changes. Insulin needs may vary in warmer climates; monitor and test often.
4. Be a smart packer
Pack medications, insulin and testing equipment in your carry on when flying. Be very careful when packing insulin; it can overheat and break. You may not be able get the food you expect or need so pack plenty of snacks for the trip and consider unforeseen delays. Be sure to have enough food and medication at all times. Be sure to pack extra testing supplies in case one doesn’t work.
5. Testing
Glucose meters and test strips should be used in normal temperatures. When in extreme temperatures, test the equipment with glucose solutions to insure accurate readings. Keep with you throughout your travels.
6. Storage
Extreme heat can make insulin less effective. Keep it out of direct sunlight. Store your insulin in a refrigerator or insulated bag but don’t freeze. You can buy a small ice pack for your purse or fanny pack to keep insulin cold when out and about.
7. Frequent check-ups
Make sure you check your blood glucose frequently; before meals and 2-3 hours after meals. Keep in mind that new foods may have unknown effects on glucose. If you are more active than normal, test yourself often and adjust your medication accordingly.
8. Sick day
Discuss sick day care with your health care provider. There is always a chance you become sick while on vacation and you want to be prepared.
9. Drink water
Drink plenty of water, especially if exercising. The heat and caffeinated beverages will dehydrate you.
10. Keep Moving and Watch the Sun
Wear your shoes and sunscreen. Don’t sit in a car too long. Every couple of hours walk a few minutes for improved blood flow.
And lastly…. The goal is to RELAX and HAVE FUN! Be conscientious and monitor often, but make sure you enjoy yourself. You do deserve it!
